This was the definitive book for the month of March in our house. I regret that it is no longer available in hardcover, for it is my favorite book to give to new little March babies. Marc Simont effectively uses black and white to illustrate all the woodland animals from the tiny snails to the brown bear awakening from their winter homes. Author Ruth Krauss urges the animals along.... "They sniff the air, they run!" And they are rewarded with a surprise - the first little flower of the season. When I give this book to March babies I write in the front that every year on their birthday they should go outside and look for a flower. (It helps to include some crocus bulbs for the parents in this gift, but they are pretty hard to find in the Spring!)
There is nothing quite like that first flower to awaken us from our own malaise. I found mine last week.

Now I have to post our crocus pictures, too. What a lovely little photo. Theo liked that book when he was up. You are so great with children's book, and we are so lucky.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of children's books and gardening, we just saw _Miss Potter_. There were a few things I didn't like about it (like the few moments when animation played a corny role), but overall it was a nice, romantic story about Beatrix Potter and the story of her books coming to be. It also had some romance and lovely, lovely scenery. You'd like it.
