Mertensia

One week ago I purchased Mertensia (Virginia Bluebells) at the Capital District Garden Show. I was advised to wait until the severe cold snap had passed before planting it in my garden. Here it is on my kitchen counter, blossoming, stretching and yearning to be outside. Its color is as delicate as fragile glass.

Today I found a spot near my emerging pink bleeding heart where I hope it will survive, but this attempt might be strike three. I have planted it twice before in another part of my shade garden - good drainage, good soil. It is known for going completely dormant after blossoming, to the point of absolute invisibility. It is also known for being quite reliable in reappearing, even colonizing. But both times it has not returned the following Spring. I'm having a difficult time accepting defeat with this plant that I simply love to look at. I welcome any hints for success!
